BEIJING -- Broadway comes to China next month when the Tony
Award-winning hit musical "42nd Street" tours seven cities around
the country, giving Chinese auds a chance to kick up their
heels.
The show will be staged 70 times in the cities of Shanghai,
Hangzhou, Nanjing, Ningbo, Hefei, Wuhan and the capital Beijing. It
is due to start its Chinese run on Sept. 3.
After years with only patriotic stage shows to raise their spirits,
Chinese auds have been able to see quite a few Broadway musicals in
recent years, since "Les Miserables" and "Cats" in 2003, "The Sound
of Music" in 2004, "Phantom of the Opera" a year later and "The
Lion King" last year.
Part of the ticket revenues will be donated to the Soong Ching Ling
Music Fund to support an exchange program between Chinese and
American youngsters.
The show is produced by Nederlander, Troika Entertainment and
Broadway Asia Entertainment, while the Chinese partners include
Beijing Time New Century Entertainment and Shanghai Media
Entertainment Group.
